Let me say this clearly from the start: this is not an attack on Islam. It’s not an attempt to smear the everyday Muslim who just wants to live a decent, peaceful life. It’s a call to action — to the many Muslims who reject violence, hate, and extremism, but who have so far done far too little to prove it out loud.
Because while the world burns from attacks carried out by those who claim divine permission from the Quran — from knife assaults on Western streets to grooming gangs that hide behind culture, and fiery sermons that call for the downfall of the societies that offered safe haven — the so-called “moderate” majority remains largely silent. Or worse, uncomfortably quiet.
And that silence speaks volumes.
We Don’t Blame All — But We Do Expect More
When extremists shout “Allahu Akbar” as they detonate bombs, stab innocent bystanders, or call for the death of cartoonists, we’re told: “That’s not Islam.”
But if that’s true — and I believe it is for many — then where is the loud, unmissable rejection of those who do act in Islam’s name?
I’m not asking for press releases or carefully worded apologies. I’m asking for something far more basic — moral severance. A complete and public cutting of ties with the radicals, the hate-preachers, and the ideological poison that fuels them.
If a toxic relative brought shame to my family’s name — committed crimes, lied in court, threatened innocent lives — I wouldn’t just mutter my disapproval at the dinner table. I’d cut them off. I’d want nothing, and I mean nothing, to do with them.
Why is it different in the case of Islam?
Faith Must Never Be an Excuse for Cowardice
Yes, extremists misuse scripture. But let’s not pretend the Quran is a blank slate. Like the Bible or the Torah, it contains verses that can be interpreted in violent ways — and extremists do exactly that. They don’t invent their ideology from thin air; they draw it from a literalist reading of the book many moderates also hold sacred.
That’s why the issue isn’t just theological — it’s moral. If moderate Muslims believe those verses are misused, then it’s on them to say so. Loudly. Repeatedly. Without fear or apology. Otherwise, they’re allowing the radicals to define the faith.
And if a religion can be interpreted as a permission slip for violence, then the only way to save its soul is to disown those interpretations completely — and those who promote them.
The West Has Been Far Too Tolerant of Intolerance
We’ve bent over backwards to welcome Muslim communities, offering refuge, opportunity, and respect. And many have contributed greatly to our societies.
But we’ve also been bullied by political correctness. We’ve turned a blind eye to no-go areas, hateful sermons, school radicalisation, and abuse scandals for fear of being called racist.
That’s over.
Tolerance must go both ways — and if those claiming to be moderates still share mosque space with extremists, still accept preachers who justify violence, or still choose family and tribe over moral clarity, then the line has to be drawn.
A Challenge, Not an Accusation
If you are a Muslim reading this who is horrified by the acts of radicals — then I’m not your enemy. I’m standing with you. But I’m asking — urging — you to speak louder than the hate, to demand reform, to kick out the poison from within your own house.
Not just because it’s the right thing to do.
But because if you don’t — that silence will continue to be mistaken for consent. And in time, it will destroy not just the West you live in, but the very faith you say the radicals are perverting.
You want to be seen as peaceful? Then be boldly peaceful.
You want us to separate you from the extremists? Then separate yourselves from them.
The clock is ticking. And the world is watching.
Hope isn’t what they promise you. It’s how you carry on when they don’t deliver.
