And Why We\u2019re All Stuck on the Wheel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When people hear \u201cglobal debt,\u201d it sounds like a giant hole swallowing the world. But debt isn\u2019t a void \u2014 it\u2019s an IOU. For every borrower, there\u2019s a lender. So first question: <strong>who owns all this debt?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Actually Holds It?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Governments owe most of it to their own people.<\/strong> Pensions, banks, insurers, and the central banks themselves hold the majority of public bonds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Foreign governments and investors hold chunks.<\/strong> China, Japan, and sovereign wealth funds sit on U.S. Treasuries. Emerging markets often owe to overseas banks and funds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Households and companies owe debt to banks \u2014 who package and resell it as assets.<\/strong> If you\u2019ve got a pension, insurance policy, or even a savings account, odds are you own some of this debt indirectly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, when politicians shout about \u201cthe debt,\u201d much of it is money we owe\u2026 ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Did We End Up Here?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because debt is useful. Bonds let governments fund wars, roads, railways, schools, and bailouts without instantly hiking taxes. Businesses use debt to expand. Families use it to buy homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s smoother than demanding \u201cpay up now.\u201d Instead, you spread costs over time. That\u2019s why bonds became the norm in the West from the 1600s onwards. Before bonds, rulers had three messy options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tax harder until revolts started.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Force loans out of nobles and merchants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plunder colonies or rivals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Bonds were the elegant solution: voluntary, tradable, and less bloody. They gave Britain and the Dutch Republic the financial firepower to build empires while others stalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why We Can\u2019t Step Off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So if bonds solved old problems, why does it now feel like a trap? Because once you build an economy around them, you can\u2019t easily stop. Debt underpins:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Your pension fund<\/strong> (needs government bonds for steady income).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Your bank\u2019s safety net<\/strong> (government bonds are counted as \u201crisk-free\u201d reserves).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Your mortgage rate<\/strong> (set relative to government bond yields).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Pull that out, and the whole structure shakes. Governments know this. Voters rely on it. Investors demand it. Which is why no leader dares experiment with ending the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hamster Wheel of Debt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So here we are: running endlessly on the hamster wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When times are good, governments borrow \u201cjust a bit more.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When times are bad, they borrow a lot more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paying it down is politically toxic, so the wheel spins on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It isn\u2019t that no one sees the risks \u2014 it\u2019s that stepping off the wheel risks collapse. The best we get is slowing the spin: growth faster than interest, credible fiscal rules, and careful restructuring when debts turn rotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Irony<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cidiots in charge\u201d might look reckless, but they\u2019re trapped too. If they slam the brakes, the wheel breaks. If they sprint harder, it overheats. So they jog on, hoping the system holds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And maybe that\u2019s the lesson: debt isn\u2019t a bug of the modern economy \u2014 it\u2019s the design. The hamster wheel doesn\u2019t stop.
