The reality is the opposite. We\u2019ve traded away sovereignty, skills, and security \u2014 and handed control of national life to global corporations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Great Shift: 1990s Onwards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Thirty-plus years ago, a political consensus formed across Left and Right: shrink the state, privatise public services, and integrate Britain into a globalised economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Defence<\/strong>: Military recruitment handed to <strong>Capita<\/strong>, tanks maintained by <strong>Babcock<\/strong>, battlefield comms outsourced to <strong>General Dynamics UK<\/strong>, cyber payroll given to <strong>Sopra Steria<\/strong> \u2014 a French IT firm that promptly presided over a data breach affecting 272,000 service personnel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy<\/strong>: The UK\u2019s critical energy grid sold into foreign ownership, leaving French, German, and Chinese companies controlling large sections of supply.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transport<\/strong>: Railways fragmented and franchised to multinationals. Public money still underwrites risk, but profits flow offshore.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Housing<\/strong>: Local authorities stripped of the power to build; private developers and foreign buyers shape the market instead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This wasn\u2019t an accident. It was a strategy: <strong>move responsibility out of government and into the hands of corporations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Defence Example: Dependency by Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The British Army is the perfect case study of how this ideology corrodes sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Surveillance<\/strong>: When the RAF lacked capacity over Gaza, the MoD hired a U.S. private contractor, Straight Flight Nevada (a Sierra Nevada Corp. subsidiary), to fly missions. British eyes in the sky \u2014 but controlled from the outside.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recruitment<\/strong>: Capita\u2019s \u00a31.3 billion contract repeatedly missed enlistment targets, yet it was extended. Outsourcing failure became normalised.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Equipment<\/strong>: The \u00a35.5 billion Ajax armoured vehicle programme, run by <strong>General Dynamics<\/strong>, has been years late and plagued with safety issues. The Army still doesn\u2019t have a working fleet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cybersecurity<\/strong>: SSCL (later Sopra Steria) lost control of payroll data for the entire Armed Forces. A foreign company held the keys to military pay \u2014 and dropped them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of these \u201cefficiencies\u201d weakened national independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Globalisation Logic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Why was this done? The arguments repeated for decades:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Cheaper<\/em>: Private firms \u201cmore efficient\u201d than the state. (Tell that to anyone watching Ajax bleed billions.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Smaller government<\/em>: Keep headcounts down, boast of savings, pass costs off-book.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Interdependence<\/em>: Shared global supply chains reduce conflict risk. In practice, it just makes us hostage to others\u2019 politics and failures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And so Britain joined the global race to <strong>hollow out the state<\/strong>. Thatcher started it, Blair locked it in, and every government since has nodded along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Consequences We Now Live With<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Loss of Sovereignty<\/strong>: Britain cannot even patrol its skies without buying in foreign contractors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Erosion of Skills<\/strong>: Once state engineers and workshops go, they don\u2019t come back. Sheffield Forgemasters had to be nationalised in 2021 just to preserve heavy forging capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Security Risks<\/strong>: From data breaches to foreign-owned energy and transport, the state\u2019s critical arteries are exposed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Political Capture<\/strong>: Contractors don\u2019t just deliver \u2014 they lobby. Revolving doors spin between Whitehall and firms like Elbit, Raytheon, Serco.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pattern Across Sectors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Defence isn\u2019t unique. The same story repeats:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Energy<\/strong>: Dependence on EDF (France), RWE (Germany), and CGN (China) for our grid. Price shocks prove the danger of foreign control.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transport<\/strong>: Rail franchises collapse into public bailouts, but the outsourcing model never dies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Health<\/strong>: NHS contracts handed to private providers who cherry-pick profitable services, leaving the state to handle the rest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Every sector shows the same 30-year logic: <strong>the state retreats, corporations advance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Was Lost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Britain once had:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nationalised energy, steel, transport, and defence industries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sovereign capacity in engineering, shipbuilding, heavy industry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Government departments staffed to handle logistics, recruitment, catering, and IT in-house.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All dismantled in the name of \u201cefficiency.\u201d The result? A nation dependent on global corporations for the very basics of sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hard Truth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This wasn\u2019t just poor management. It was deliberate policy: <strong>globalisation as law, privatisation as dogma<\/strong>. The British state was hollowed out by choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now the cracks show. War in Ukraine, energy crises, cyber hacks, failed military procurement \u2014 each is a symptom of 30 years of outsourcing sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Question Now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If the state could build Spitfires in six months in 1940, it can certainly recruit soldiers, maintain tanks, and forge artillery barrels in 2025. The people and skills exist \u2014 if the will exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The choice is simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep outsourcing sovereignty until there\u2019s nothing left but a flag on the contract paperwork.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or rebuild the capacity to defend, power, and govern ourselves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hope isn&#8217;t what they promise you.
