There is no pleasing some people regardless of rosette colour. Humans are a strange beast.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I made this statement half in jest, but it holds a deeper truth worth exploring. Why is it that, even when we get what we say we want, we often end up dissatisfied?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hedonic Treadmill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychologists call this tendency the <em>hedonic treadmill<\/em>. The idea is simple: no matter what happens\u2014good or bad\u2014we usually return to a baseline level of happiness. Win the lottery and after a year or two you\u2019re no happier than before. Lose your job and, after an adjustment period, you\u2019re usually no less happy than before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humans adapt frighteningly quickly. What felt like a huge improvement yesterday soon becomes the new normal today. And once it\u2019s normal, we start spotting flaws, inconveniences, or new problems. A party wins an election on promises of change. Supporters cheer, opponents despair. But within months, the complaints begin. The rosette may be red, blue, yellow, or green\u2014it makes little difference. Human nature kicks in. We adjust to the change, then shift our focus to what\u2019s still wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why some people seem permanently unsatisfied. Even if their \u201cutopia\u201d came into being, it wouldn\u2019t be long before they found the next thing to grumble about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Leaders, Sellers and Preachers Exploit It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The treadmill would be harmless enough if it only meant we moaned at dinner tables. But clever people in positions of influence have learned to weaponise it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Politicians<\/strong>: They promise change knowing that dissatisfaction will always resurface. When it does, they simply point at the \u201cother side\u201d and say, <em>\u201cSee? You need us again.\u201d<\/em> It keeps the cycle of power turning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Advertising<\/strong>: Marketers thrive on the treadmill. The product that thrilled you last year is now \u201coutdated.\u201d A shinier, faster, slimmer version is dangled in front of you. Satisfaction is always just one purchase away\u2014but never lasting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Religion (all stripes)<\/strong>: Many faiths tap into the same psychology. Earthly life is never enough; true fulfilment is always promised somewhere else\u2014heaven, enlightenment, paradise\u2014so long as you stay loyal, keep believing, keep giving.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In every case, the restless human mind is nudged along the treadmill, urged to keep running toward an ever-receding goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Strange Beast Called Human<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It might sound cynical, but it\u2019s really just recognition of what we are. Humans are restless creatures. Our dissatisfaction drives innovation, reform, and creativity\u2014but it also drives division, complaint, and endless argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Step Off the Treadmill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If we know we\u2019re being nudged along this endless loop of dissatisfaction, the natural question is: <em>what can we do about it?<\/em> We can\u2019t rewrite human nature, but we can be more conscious of how it\u2019s being used against us. A few simple principles help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pause Before Buying<\/strong>: When tempted by the \u201clatest\u201d product, ask: <em>Do I need this, or am I just chasing the feeling of newness?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Question the Promise<\/strong>: Whether it\u2019s a politician, an advert, or a preacher, ask: <em>Is what they\u2019re offering genuinely possible\u2014or just another carrot to keep me running?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Notice the Baseline<\/strong>: Remind yourself that satisfaction fades naturally. It\u2019s not always because something\u2019s \u201cwrong\u201d\u2014it\u2019s just the treadmill doing what it does.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Practice Gratitude<\/strong>: Taking stock of what already <em>is<\/em> good interrupts the cycle. The treadmill slows when you stop to look around.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Share Perspective<\/strong>: Talk about this openly. The more people recognise the pattern, the less power it has.
