If you go looking for trouble, you\u2019ll find it. It\u2019s not a hard sport to master \u2014 in fact, it\u2019s probably the easiest one going. That\u2019s why the modern left seem to have taken it up as their national pastime. For years, I\u2019ve joked that \u201ctrouble\u2011hunting\u201d is the laziest form of activism there is. These days, though, it\u2019s starting to feel less like a quip and more like a cultural diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because let\u2019s be honest: the so\u2011called \u201cprogressive\u201d movement isn\u2019t looking all that progressive. The very name is an oxymoron. They\u2019re not building bridges to a better future \u2014 they\u2019re busy burning the old ones, often before they\u2019ve even checked if anyone still needs to cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of fostering freedom of thought, they\u2019re restricting it \u2014 policing language, ideas, and even history, all under the banner of \u201cprogress.\u201d What was once about empowering people has become a performance of moral superiority, complete with its own medals table for who can be the most offended, the fastest. The Outrage Olympics, if you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Progress Feels a Lot Like Regression<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

If you want to see the difference between classical progressivism and its modern counterpart, just look at their approach to speech. The old progressives fought for more voices, more debate, more open space for ideas. Today\u2019s progressives? They\u2019re far more likely to campaign for silencing, cancelling, or re\u2011labelling anything that offends their sensibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a strange kind of progress that shrinks the conversation rather than expanding it. And it\u2019s not just speech \u2014 we see the same thing in art, literature, advertising, even comedy. Entire creative industries now operate in fear of saying the wrong thing to the wrong group at the wrong time. That\u2019s not progress. It\u2019s cultural book\u2011burning with better PR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jeans Advert That Became a Moral Crisis<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Take the recent American jeans advert. Some critics labelled it \u201cNazi propaganda\u201d because of its visual style \u2014 ignoring the tiny little fact that the company\u2019s CEO is Jewish and actively supports Jewish causes in Israel. You don\u2019t need a PhD in history to know that Nazis and Jews weren\u2019t exactly a collaborative team. But that didn\u2019t stop the Twitterati (or whatever we\u2019re calling them now) from clutching their pearls and firing off hot takes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a perfect microcosm of the modern progressive outrage machine: no context, no proportion, just instant moral panic, amplified for likes and retweets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why This Matters<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s the thing: progress, real progress, is hard. It requires calm analysis, uncomfortable conversations, and long\u2011term thinking. Outrage, by contrast, is easy. It\u2019s instant gratification \u2014 a way to feel morally superior without doing any of the heavy lifting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while the modern progressive left are the star players in this particular sport, let\u2019s be fair: the right aren\u2019t exactly saints either. They\u2019ve learned the outrage game too. But it\u2019s the left who package it as \u201cprogress,\u201d which makes the hypocrisy sting that bit more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bigger Picture<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The result? We get stuck in a noisy standstill. Society doesn\u2019t move forward \u2014 it just gets louder, angrier, and more fractured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we really want progress, we need to put down the pitchforks and pick up something far scarier: nuance. But nuance doesn\u2019t trend. It doesn\u2019t go viral. It doesn\u2019t give you gold at the Outrage Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that, perhaps, is the greatest irony of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
