No exceptions for \u201cmorality,\u201d \u201cnational security,\u201d or \u201cpublic order.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just one simple rule:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Governments cannot restrict your speech, your press, your religion, or your right to assemble.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Overnight, the world would become both <strong>freer<\/strong> and <strong>far more volatile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A New World for Free Expression<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Authoritarian governments would face an existential crisis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In <strong>China<\/strong>, criticising the Communist Party would no longer be a crime.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>Russia<\/strong>, independent journalists could publish without being labelled \u201cforeign agents.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>Saudi Arabia<\/strong>, blasphemy laws \u2014 punishable by prison or worse \u2014 would be void.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Europe would change too.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Germany\u2019s bans on Nazi imagery<\/strong>? Gone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>France\u2019s laws against insulting religions<\/strong>? Gone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The UK\u2019s \u201chate speech\u201d prosecutions<\/strong>? Gone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>press<\/strong> \u2014 everywhere \u2014 could finally operate without fear of state censorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it wouldn\u2019t just protect journalists and dissidents. <strong>Fringe voices<\/strong> \u2014 the ones many find offensive or extreme \u2014 would also enjoy unprecedented freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Calling Out the Gatekeepers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If we demanded this tomorrow, it would do more than change the law.<br>It would <strong>expose<\/strong> every government that secretly or openly wants to strangle free expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Who truly believes in freedom \u2014 and who only believes in their control?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A global First Amendment would draw a line in the sand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who refused would make themselves obvious: the regimes and \u201cdemocracies\u201d that like the <strong>illusion<\/strong> of liberty but not its messy reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Could It Be Enforced?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s one thing to declare a global right \u2014 it\u2019s another to make the reluctant comply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a proposal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Coalitions of free-speech nations<\/strong> could create a pact \u2014 adopting First Amendment\u2011level protections and agreeing to enforce them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sanctions<\/strong>: Countries that refuse could face economic or trade sanctions, much like current measures against human rights abusers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Global incentives<\/strong>: States who join could get access to trade agreements, development funds, or other benefits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It wouldn\u2019t be easy. But rights only matter if they come with consequences for those who trample them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Risks and the Reward<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Make no mistake \u2014 adopting the First Amendment globally would be chaotic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hate speech laws would vanish. Governments could no longer hide behind \u201cpublic order\u201d excuses.
