Could the world handle American-style free speech?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The First Amendment<\/strong> to the U.S. Constitution \u2014 written in 1791 \u2014 has been described as the strongest protection for free expression in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It guarantees:<\/p>\n\n\n\n And crucially, it stops governments<\/strong> from interfering with those rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This means that in the U.S., even offensive or controversial opinions are protected<\/strong> \u2014 a model that would be unthinkable in many other parts of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If the First Amendment became a global human right<\/strong>, the impact would be seismic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s a shield for the unpopular<\/strong>, the whistleblower, and the truth-teller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But here\u2019s the catch \u2014 many nations wouldn\u2019t accept it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 19)<\/strong> already says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cEveryone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression\u2026 to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Sounds good? Here\u2019s the problem:<\/strong> it includes broad exceptions for morality, public order, and national security.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Those exceptions are exactly what many governments use to silence dissent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n In theory: Yes.<\/strong> A rewritten global Article 19 \u2014 with far fewer loopholes \u2014 could put First Amendment-level protections into international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In practice: Hardly.<\/strong> It would require rewriting how entire legal systems approach speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And some of the biggest players \u2014 including countries currently on the UN Human Rights Council \u2014 would fight tooth and nail to stop it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The First Amendment is uniquely American because it treats freedom of expression as almost absolute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Turning it into a global human right<\/strong> would empower billions \u2014 but it would also collide head-on<\/strong> with the way most of the world balances speech against \u201csocial good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hope isn’t what they promise you. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Could the world handle American-style free speech?
