But how solid are these claims?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Numbers Aren\u2019t Bodies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be clear: no one is counting corpses marked \u201ccause of death: car fumes.\u201d These figures are <strong>modelled estimates<\/strong>. They use population\u2011wide health data and apply statistical risk models to guess how many deaths are <strong>\u201cattributable to\u201d<\/strong> certain pollutants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2008, the estimate for PM\u2082.\u2085 (fine particles) in London was about <strong>4,267 deaths<\/strong>. By 2019, updated models including both PM\u2082.\u2085 and NO\u2082 gave <strong>3,600\u20134,100 deaths<\/strong>. Then in 2020, Clean Air in London published a new projection of <strong>\u22486,850 deaths<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s a huge jump \u2014 especially when you consider that <strong>pollutant levels have been falling for decades<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Changed? The Methodology.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The real shift wasn\u2019t a surge in pollution or a population explosion. It was <strong>how the numbers were counted<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pre\u20112015:<\/strong> Estimates only looked at PM\u2082.\u2085.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2015 onwards:<\/strong> COMEAP (the UK\u2019s air pollution health panel) added NO\u2082, but combined it with PM\u2082.\u2085 using a \u201cjoint effects\u201d model to avoid double\u2011counting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2020 projection:<\/strong> Counted PM\u2082.\u2085 and NO\u2082 more <strong>separately<\/strong>, applying only partial overlap correction. Result? <strong>A much higher headline figure.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words: <strong>same air, different calculator.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why This Matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When campaigners and policymakers use these inflated \u201ccombined\u201d numbers without explaining how they\u2019re built, it paints a picture more absolute than the science supports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are these estimates baseless? No. <strong>There\u2019s strong evidence that long\u2011term exposure to PM\u2082.\u2085 and NO\u2082 harms health.<\/strong> But there\u2019s also a <strong>big gap between a modelled attribution and a proven, countable death toll.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Honest Take<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s fair to say that air pollution shortens lives. It\u2019s also fair to say that <strong>the headline figures are shaped as much by modelling choices as by raw reality<\/strong> \u2014 and that those choices conveniently support anti\u2011ICE policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we\u2019re going to make sweeping changes to how millions live and move, we owe the public <strong>clarity, not just scary numbers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hope isn&#8217;t what they promise you.
