Something most people never stop to think about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>How much of that tax was the government taxing&#8230; itself?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let\u2019s Walk It Through<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine the government takes <strong>\u00a3100<\/strong> from you \u2014 a private sector worker \u2014 in income tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It then pays a public sector employee <strong>\u00a330<\/strong> in wages.<br>From that wage, it deducts <strong>\u00a310<\/strong> in income tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, HMRC adds it up and says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve collected \u00a3110 in income tax!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the truth:<br>That <strong>\u00a310<\/strong> wasn\u2019t \u201craised\u201d at all.<br>It was part of the original \u00a3100, <strong>looped back in<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It didn\u2019t come from a business selling goods.<br>It didn\u2019t emerge from trade or growth or risk.<br>It came from the same tax pot it supposedly replenishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So What\u2019s Really Happening?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When public sector workers \u201cpay tax,\u201d what we\u2019re seeing is not income generation \u2014 it\u2019s <strong>cost reduction<\/strong>. It\u2019s a <strong>discount<\/strong> on the wage the government just paid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full \u00a330 wage didn\u2019t cost the government \u00a330 \u2014 it cost <strong>\u00a320<\/strong>, because they\u2019re clawing \u00a310 back from their own transaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet\u2026 that \u00a310 shows up in the official tax figures <strong>as if it were new money<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This Isn\u2019t a Dig at Public Workers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be absolutely clear:<br>Teachers, firefighters, paramedics \u2014 they do important work. They <em>experience<\/em> tax like anyone else. Their payslip shows deductions, and they have every right to feel taxed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But systemically \u2014 <strong>at the macroeconomic level<\/strong> \u2014 their tax doesn&#8217;t behave the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It doesn\u2019t fund the government.<br>It just reduces the cost of keeping it running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why It Matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This sleight of hand \u2014 whether deliberate or just quietly accepted \u2014 <strong>distorts the truth<\/strong> about how healthy our public finances really are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When governments say,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe raised \u00a3250 billion in income tax,\u201d<br>they don\u2019t separate what came from <em>productive activity<\/em> and what came from <em>recycled payroll<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That masks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The real size of the private sector tax base<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The true cost of the public sector<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The level of dependency on borrowed or printed money<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In short: <strong>it hides fragility behind a headline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thought<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No one talks about this \u2014 maybe because it&#8217;s a bit abstract, or maybe because it makes too many people uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if we&#8217;re going to have honest conversations about tax, spending, and the future of public services, we need to start with this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Taxing yourself doesn\u2019t count.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cHope isn&#8217;t what they promise you.
